Talking about Humanitarianism

I’ve started An Imperfect Offering by James Orbinski and I like it a lot so far. Although I can’t help but feel that there is no perfect way to talk about humanitarianism. It can’t be done in an imperialistic, paternalistic way. And it can’t be done in a self-sacrificing, overly humble way either. Both ways of describing the work leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. So how to talk about it?
