There is an unspoken joy about sleeping when it’s dark out, and waking up with the light. It is an unspoken joy that we need to speak about; our bodies viscerally crave sleep when the winter asks us to curl up in warm places and rest. And yet we fight this mentally, emotionally, professionally and culturally. We say to ourselves, work harder! We ignore and postpone our urge to sleep. We do not seek out the quiet, warm places to rest that winter gives us the perfect opportunity to find. Why don’t we reclaim the long sleeping hours of winter? At least personally? One day, we can together cultivate a healthier culture where rest becomes valued again.
