Tomato Soup and Cartoons

Today over a hot bowl of lentil soup with lemon, Mat told me a story of when he was in kindergarten. Each day he would come home and have a bowl of tomato soup in his special flat bowl with a black and red border. Sometimes he would also have a grilled cheese sandwich. He would watch a cartoon on TV, sometimes Spiderman, but really, he liked whatever was on. Then he would go outside to play for the rest of the afternoon (he loved playing outside).

Where do our childhoods go? Are we designed to move away from the freedom of childhood and into the self-imposed challenges of adulthood? Or are the challenges real and external? How much play do we willingly give up? How do we bring it back?
